When Summer Gets Too Much
There comes a point every summer when the heat stops being pleasant and starts being… oppressive.
The air feels thick. Everything moves slower. You’d give anything for a breeze, a moment of coolness, something to cut through the heaviness.
That’s exactly why we made this incense.
婆娑起舞 (Po Suo Qi Wu) translates to “dancing gracefully”—the way tree shadows sway and flicker on a summer day, or the way you might move if you finally caught a cool breeze. It comes from an ancient poem describing people relaxing beneath the trees, enjoying the simple pleasure of shade and movement.
This is incense designed specifically for summer. Not just “light enough for warm weather”—actually cooling.
The Scent Profile
The cool: We blend fresh mint into the formula—enough to create that signature cooling sensation without overwhelming everything else. It hits immediately, like the first sip of iced tea on a hot day.
The sweet: Hoi An agarwood (惠安沉香) provides a gentle, honeyed sweetness that softens the mint and gives the fragrance depth. It keeps the scent from feeling like just another “spa” mint product.
The fresh: The star ingredient is seasonal Yunnan lemongrass, harvested when its aromatic oils are at their peak. It adds a bright, citrusy green note—clean and alive, like crushing a fresh leaf between your fingers.
Together, they create something genuinely refreshing. Not “refreshing” as a marketing word—actually, physically refreshing. The kind that makes you take a deeper breath and feel your shoulders drop.
Why Seasonal Matters
We specifically source our lemongrass from Yunnan during peak season.
Like produce, aromatic plants have their moment. Lemongrass harvested at the right time has an intensity and clarity that off-season material simply can’t match. It’s the difference between a tomato in August and a tomato in February—technically the same thing, completely different experience.
This means 婆娑起舞 is a limited seasonal release. When this batch is gone, we’ll wait until next summer’s harvest to make more.
The Poetry Behind the Name
The phrase 婆娑 (pó suō) appears in the Classic of Poetry (诗经), China’s oldest collection of verse. In one poem, it describes people gathering beneath the trees, swaying and dancing in the cool shade:
“子仲之子,婆娑其下” The children of Zizhong, dancing gracefully beneath…
It’s a snapshot of summer leisure from 2,500 years ago—and somehow still exactly what we all crave when the heat gets too much. A cool spot. A gentle breeze. A moment to just… be.
